Diplomat Long Term Travel Medical Insurance: Renewable Coverage for Extended Travel with Optional War Risk Protection

For extended or open-ended travel — such as long-term mission assignments, humanitarian projects, faith-based service work, conferences spanning months, or prolonged field stays — short-term plans often fall short. Diplomat Long Term by Global Underwriters is a renewable travel medical insurance plan that provides ongoing Accident and Sickness coverage while outside your home country.

It offers flexible medical maximums up to $1,000,000, a range of deductibles, and core benefits, including emergency medical evacuation, repatriation, trip interruption, and more. An optional War Risk Coverage rider is available (for an additional premium) to waive the standard war exclusion for accidents occurring in designated War Risk Territories.

This plan supports coverage periods ranging from several months to a maximum of 3 years and helps deliver predictable, long-term medical protection without high ongoing premiums.

Key Coverage Highlights – Diplomat Long Term

Benefits are per insured person per policy period unless otherwise noted. Exact limits, terms, and conditions are in the policy documents. Medical maximum choices typically range from $50,000 to $1,000,000 (age restrictions apply: lower maximums for ages 65+; $20,000 for age 80+ in many cases). Deductible options: $0 to $5,000.

  • Emergency Accident and Sickness Medical Expense — Up to the selected medical maximum. After the deductible, the plan pays 80% of the first $5,000 of eligible costs, then 100% of eligible costs up to the maximum (covering doctor visits, hospitalization, prescriptions, etc.).

  • Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation — Up to $1,000,000 (or plan-specific limit) for medically necessary transportation.

  • Repatriation of Remains — Up to $50,000.

  • Emergency Medical Reunion — Up to $50,000 for a companion’s travel expenses during hospitalization.

  • Political & Natural Disaster Evacuation — Up to $50,000 (enhanced rider option available in some versions).

  • Trip Interruption — Up to $5,000 for the unused portion of prepaid expenses due to a covered reason.

  • Baggage Loss — Up to $250 total ($50 per article).

  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) — Principal sum up to $1,000,000 (base often $25,000; enhanced options available).

  • 24/7 Travel Assistance Services — Multilingual support, including U.S. board-certified physician referrals and coordination.

  • Additional optional enhancements — Athletic & Hazardous Activity Benefit, Incidental Home Country Coverage, and War Risk Coverage.

Standard travel medical plans typically exclude losses caused by declared or undeclared war or acts of war. The optional War Risk Coverage rider (available for an additional premium) waives this exclusion for accidents occurring within the geographic limits, territorial waters, or airspace of Designated War Risk Territories.

Coverage is structured in three tiers:

  • War Risk Area 1 (High Risk) — Mandatory additional premium and advance notice required; provides coverage across Areas 1, 2, and 3.

  • War Risk Area 2 (Medium Risk) — Highly recommended; covers Areas 2 and 3.

  • War Risk Area 3 (Low Risk) — Recommended; covers Area 3.

This rider is particularly valuable for organizations and individuals traveling to or through higher-risk regions for mission, humanitarian, or faith-based work. War Risk Coverage ends on the earlier of policy termination or company notice (with a 10-day grace period in some cases), but protects claims for losses that occurred while the rider was active. Advance notice and extra premium are required for high-risk countries.
